SCALLOP SHELL SYMBOL USED ON COAT OF ARMS OR FAMILY CREST
The "escallop" is a very ordinary heraldic charge. In modern coats of arms it bas no
particular meaning, but it is probable that it may have in very ancient ones. The pilgrims
and the mendicant friars of early days used these shells, holding them out to beg for
alms, and the shell carried in the hat became a recognized badge of the pilgrim.
Consequently itis usually supposed the escallop may have been adopted to indicate a
pilgrimage to the Holy Land as a Crusader. The arms shewn are those of the old Lords
Dacre.
