MAUNCH  LADY'S SLEEVE SYMBOL USED ON COAT OF ARMS OR FAMILY CREST
The maunch occurs in the arms of many familiese.g., the Lords Wharton (white on
a black ground), the Lords Hastings (black on a white ground), and the Lords
Conyens (gold on a blue ground). Although the conventional heraldic maunch is not
always easily recognizable as a lady's sleeve, that is what it really is, and it usually
closely follows the form of the sleeve of the fourteenth century as here shewn.
Doubtless its popularity as a L'harge is due to the ethics of the tournament, when a
Knight was supposed to wear the favour " of his lady.
