LYMPHAD NORSE VESSEL USED ON COAT OF ARMS OR FAMILY CREST
The heraldic "lymphad" is the representation of the ancient Norse vessel with both oars
and sails Witb which the Vikings raided our coasts in early days. It is not very
frequently met with in English heraldry, but is constantly to be observed in Scottish
coats of arms. Probably it is most frequently met with in the coats of arms of the many
branches of the Campbell clan, in whose arms it usually figures in the second quarter
as indicative of the Lordship of Lorne a title claimed by the Duke of Argyll, the
head of the clan.
HERALDIC SYMBOLOGY
Meaning of Medieval Heraldic Symbols Charges and Shield Divisions
The principal element and most important part of a heraldic achievement are shields,
shields in heraldic language are called escutcheon.
Complete surface of the shield is described as field, it can be plain, it can represent
a single tincture or multiple sections of differed tinctures divided
by various lines of partition. The shield contains the field
